The meeting with Senator Casey’s staff was a success and thanks to everyone who participated, especially Bernie who organized and put it together. We will be having a briefing about that at the meeting.

The meeting with Senator Specter’s staff is this Wednesday, May 28th at 2 p.m. at his office at 600 Arch Street. If interested, please email us back. So far we have Deesha, Nick, Mary Day and Tayrn going. We will be meeting at Cosi Cafe by 115pm. Cosi is located at 4th and Chestnut. We will briefly go over how the meeting will go. There was going to be a conference call, but the meeting in advance should take care of that. Email back here with questions.

There is still time to register for the 2008 CARE National Conference. See below:
CARE NATIONAL CONFERENCE – JUNE 18 – 19, 2008 – Washington, DC
CARE International is one of the founding organizations of the ONE Campaign. Every June, CARE holds a national conference in Washington, DC that brings advocates from around the world together to educate and use their voice to communicate to the legislators that global poverty is a priority to USAmericans. The conference is June 18th and 19th and the second day gives a unique opportunity for you to “take the Hill” and go speak to your elected officials about global poverty.  Author Jeffrey Sachs is one of the guest speakers. Some of you may know him for his astounding book, “The End of Poverty.” CARE is also always looking for local volunteers to advocate on empowering women to end global poverty. If you have any questions about the conference or CARE, please direct them to Mary Day Kent (mdkent@care.org), Katie (kholscher@yahoo.com) or Deesha ( dyer95@hotmail.com).  About the conference: https://my.care.org/care/events/2008conference/details.tcl.  About CARE: www.care.org

Also, there is a new ONE Philly field coordinator. More details on that coming forth. Looking forward to seeing you on the 7th, where we will go over a few things. Meeting should last no more than an hour. Have a nice Holiday and remember to check www.onephilly.wordpress.com.

NEXT MEETING ALERT – SATURDAY, JUNE 7, 2008, 10AM

Place still being worked out. Will send details ASAP. We will be discussing the ongoing progress of Philly ONE and how you can get involved. Bring other people concerned about global poverty with you.   Format of the meeting will be a bit different. If too many people have an issue with this date, then we will change it. EMAIL BACK IMMEDIATELY if you know NOW that you can’t make it.

NEW MEETING FORMAT

We recognize how easy it is to get distracted when things are moving along fast and easy, so keep it fresh in our minds why we are all involved, the meetings will be structured a bit different  - but still kept at an hour! The beginning of the meeting will be a 5 minute briefing on an issue that ONE concentrates on. Each meeting will be a different issue. Members will get handouts of that issue. Then the regular meeting will commence, followed by a 15 – 20 minute workshop or discussion about different tools we can use or things we can do in our non-group time to keep on track. For example, letter-writing, calling politicians, emailing, local farming, sign making, tabling, etc. If you have an idea of a workshop you’d like to do, let us know at one.philadelphia@gmail.com.

CONGRESSIONAL MEETINGS – CASEY, MAY 13TH!!

Last meeting, we collected names of those interested in doing local visits with the offices of Senators Specter and Casey to convey to them that their constituents care about issues of global poverty, AIDS, etc. We are happy to report that the meeting with Casey has been set up by Bernie. That meeting will take place on May 13 th at his office, 2000 Market Street. It will take place between 12 – 1230 pm. There will be a briefing call on this before the meeting. Please contact Bernie immediately at nodrybones@hotmail.com to be involved. Specter info will be out as soon as the meeting is set up. Great job setting that up Bernie!

ONE VOTE ‘08

Thank you to everyone who did visibility events at the recent PA primary battle that happened this past April. If anyone has pictures, please do send them to one.philadelphia@gmail.com. November is still a few months away, which means there maybe more visibility opportunities in our area. As dates come in to the ONE office, Kim Smith (ONE staff) posts them on the ONE Philly Yahoo site with some instructions and guidance. We will do our best to post them up at www.onephilly.wordpress.com, but the appearances will be happening so often, we may not have a chance to, so please check the Yahoo site and if you see one that isn’t up there, let us know at one.philadelphia@gmail.com  and we’ll add it!

Whosever Gospel Mission helps homeless men and has other neighborhood programs to help the needy in the community. Thank you to Charla for organizing this. If anyone has any volunteer opportunities that ONE Philly can help out with, please email us at one.philadelphia@gmail.com. This is a chance for ONE Philly to do some work at home while recruiting more volunteers for ONE and our various organizations. Also, CONGRATULATIONS to Charla, who has been selected as a Hunger Justice Leader with Bread For The World. www.bread.org.

WHAT ARE YOUR SPECIAL TALENTS? WHAT ORGANIZATIONS DO YOU REPRESENT?

As you may or may not know, ONE Philly is comprised of many organizations that united together to fight global poverty. Well, we here at ONE Philly want you to let us know about your organization, its mission, its happenings and all of that – so reach out so we can help promote your organization as well and maybe recruit some volunteers for you! Also, do you paint, sing, draw, act, dance? Let us know if you can use any of those special talents to raise awareness about ONE.  Everyone brings something to the table, even if it is just a voice.

DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY, AN IDEA, ANYTHING TO HELP ONE PHILLY?

Well, then we’d love to hear from you. The blog is the central place for ONE Philly and if you read something, have news to share about an event, statistic, study, book, newspaper article, overseas experience; your talent and how you want to use it to help ONE Philly bring awareness to global poverty, then reach out for sure! The blog is open for anyone to post anything pertaining to ONE Philly, and that includes events and such from your separate organizations that are taking charge of restoring humanity worldwide. Reach out to us at one.philadelphia@gmail.com and we will post up your announcement or anything you wish to share with the group.

If you’d like to start one…then reach out as well.
