Philly ONE Volunteers Needed 11/14
October 30, 2009 by onephillyone philly needs volunteers now – may 2009
May 12, 2009 by onephillyIt’s been a few weeks and I want to get right to the heart of matters. We need volunteers in the Philly area for 4 things. We need to keep ONE moving in our area, and that will only work with the help from everyone. Please let us know via Facebook or send an email to one.philadelphia@gmail.com if you can do any of the following. Fighting global poverty is needed now more than ever – since the economy has taken a spiral, many organizations and individuals are donating less and advocating less – we need you. This is critical. Please don’t feel since you have no experience you can’t do any of these – we will and can train you.
Also, thank you to all of you who participated in getting the mural design together. Bernie has sent it off to ONE and we await their decision. Thank you Bernie.
ONE Tabling Opportunities - sign people up to join ONE and make a stand against global poverty. You are provided with brochures, bracelets, t-shirts and the declaration. You staff a table at an event and sign people up on the declaration and give them a bracelet and information about ONE.
1. June 27, 2009 – Dancin’ In the Streets HIV/AIDS awareness festival – 2nd and Girard, Artist Plaza. Fun, food, dancing, DJ’s, artists. ONE will have a table there
2. August 7 – 9, 2009 – *You will only have to staff one day, but the day hasn’t been decided* – Ladies of Hip-Hop Festival. Join lady MC’s, breakdancers, graffiti artists and DJ’s for a celebration of women in hip-hop. Temple University
Letters to the Editor - we need people to write letters about ONE and their personal reasons for being a part of ONE. We will give you help with the letters. These go to local magazine and newspaper editors
Mayor Nutter meeting – The local ONE chapter wants Michael Nutter to declare Philadelphia a City of ONE, which makes total sense since ONE was first announced here. We need people to call and write his office to request a meeting with us about this. The more people that call and write, the more chance we have of getting in.
Please, please, please consider being a part of one of the opportunities above. You can make a difference!
Thank you.

Here’s a nice little diddy and blurb on the ONE blog site about the Philadelphia ONE meeting….check it out! In the blog, Brian mentions the Lugar-Casey Global Food Security Act. http://www.one.org/blog/2009/02/25/call-party-in-philly/ *Volunteers needed to call Specter’s office about this bill, as well as Thank Casey’s office for the bill. Email here if you can do either*
CARE’s A Powerful Noise Philadelphia screening – This is this Thursday, March 5th at the Bridge Theater, 40th and Walnut. Come out and witness a film about 3 global women defining their roles in life amidst some obstacles. The movie only has a one night showing and will be joined by a satellite panel featuring CARE CEO, Dr. Helane Gayle, actress/model Natalie Portman and Christy Turlington Burns. You can get your tickets in advance. *ONE volunteers are needed for this event! Email to find out how and if you are available* Info on CARE – www.care.org, Info on getting your tickets: http://www.apowerfulnoise.org/screenings.html
Brian Sweeney from ONE came down and spoke with us about a few things ONE is currently working on, including changing the slogan name. It is now called ONE, NOT “ONE, The Campaign to End Global Poverty.” Please make a note of that.
He also showed us the proclamation that Governor Rendell signed making Pennsylvania a ONE state. This led into discussion on making Philadelphia a ONE city, which basically means Mayor Nutter signing a proclamation that Philadelphia is on board with ONE to fight global poverty.
*Volunteers interested in contacting the Mayor’s office to get this moving, and meeting with his staff, please email us back here*
Brian also discussed really wanted to push writing letters about ONE to the local newspapers and media outlets. It is one of the most effective ways to get out the word.
*Volunteers interested in writing letters, please email us back here and we will talk you through and send materials*
Thank you Brian for coming to Philly.
Bernie brought designs of the mural and got everyone’s opinion on it. Looks great – thanks Bernie. In the next month, volunteers are going to be putting together a proposal to ONE about the mural, and the associated costs – if it gets permission to execute. To catch you up to speed – Philly ONE is planning on (pending permission) making a transferrable mural about global poverty to put up in the city. Hoping to do that later this year. I will send out the design sometime next week with final suggestion. This may also help in getting Philadelphia to be a ONE city.
*Volunteers interested in helping with this, please email us back here*
Spring is coming and ONE Philly is looking forward to tabling at festivals, events, fairs, ANYTHING. If you know of an event, where we can stick a table and spread the word about ONE, let us know. We will give you all the materials you need.
*If you know of any events, please email us back*
Next Meeting will hopefully be in early April/late March.
Below see an email sent from ONE staff that may be of interest to you. Again, THANK YOU for all of your help. Any comments, suggestions, or questions, please reach out to one.philadelphia@gmail.com.
Have a good weekend.
ONE Applauds President Obama’s Budget
Budget outline lays the groundwork to double foreign assistance, tackle global poverty, disease
Washington, D.C.—ONE today applauded President Obama’s FY2010 budget blueprint, which included a robust increase for the international affairs budget, and lays the groundwork for President Obama to meet his commitment to doubling foreign assistance to promote global health, education, agriculture and other investments.
David Lane, President and C.E.O. of ONE, made the following statement today:
“The President, Secretary Clinton, Secretary Gates and leaders in Congress have strongly articulated the need to elevate development as a pillar of a smarter, more effective U.S. foreign policy. Today’s budget blueprint is a positive sign that these words will be backed up with action. ONE applauds President Obama for a strong start to the process of strengthening America’s efforts to combat global poverty, hunger and save lives from diseases like AIDS and malaria.”
The budget outline submitted by the President designates $51.7 billion for the international affairs budget (the 150 account), the portion of the budget that includes global poverty reduction programs. As President Obama explained in his address to Congress this week, he has brought regular spending and emergency spending together. His 2010 outline represents a $4.5 billion increase over the combined regular and emergency international affairs budget for FY2009. The full budget will be released later this spring and will detail how much of this increase will be directed specifically to poverty-reducing activities. ONE is hopeful that this amount represents a significant increase.
The blueprint document states that the budget, “puts the United States on a path to double U.S. foreign assistance. This funding will help the world’s weakest states reduce poverty, combat global health threats, develop markets, govern peacefully, and expand democracy worldwide.” To further underscore this commitment, the budget also lays out proposed continued increases through to 2014.
The budget blueprint continues:
“By increasing foreign assistance the United States will reach out to the global community and renew its role as a leader in global development and diplomacy. Through increased foreign assistance funding, the United States will embark on several new initiatives that will give children in the poorest countries access to education ensuring they can participate in the global marketplace; foster global food security through sustainable agriculture; expand goodwill and inspire service by increasing the size of the Peace Corps; and stabilize post-conflict states, creating room for them to plant the seeds of democracy….The Administration will continue to build on its commitment to save lives through increasing investments in global health programs, including areas such as maternal and child health, family planning and other core health programs, while also emphasizing a commitment to HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis through successful programs, such as the President’s Emergency plan for AIDS Relief and the Malaria Initiative.”
During the 2008 presidential campaign, President Obama committed to doubling foreign assistance and to prioritize the provision of basic medicine, food and education in areas where people are living on less than $1 per day. President Obama also stated that he will embrace the Millennium Development Goals of cutting extreme poverty and hunger around the world in half by 2015. Since those campaign commitments, the President has continued to articulate the importance of addressing global poverty, including in his Inaugural Address and most recently in his address to a joint session of Congress. President Obama’s commitments on HIV/AIDS, hunger, and child and maternal health, basic sanitation, and primary education can be viewed at www.ONE.org.
ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. For more information please visit www.ONE.org

Meeting 2/21/09 – Interested in Writing a Letter to Local Papers?
February 6, 2009 by onephillyHello all -
There will be a ONE Philly meeting on February 21, 2009 at 11am. It will be at Broad and Walnut, the Bellevue Building. You will need to let us know you are coming, so we can direct you in the appropriate space. Please email one.philadelphia@gmail.com immediately. Brian Sweeney, the ONE organizer for Pennsylvania will be making a special trip out, so we need you to come out and represent and find out how you can help fight global poverty. Also, you will get updates about the mural project…fun times.
Also, we are looking for people to write letters to the editor on behalf of ONE. Letters to local newspapers and such. It gets the word out about ONE and alerts more PA folks to what they can do. Please email one.philadelphia@gmail.com if interested.
Thanks!
